Seven of nine post-season award winners were named Tuesday night during the annual Gallia Academy High School fall sports banquet, held in the dining hall of Buckeye Hills Career Center, Rio Grande. A capacity crowd viewed the evening’s activities.
Two awards, the Golden Helmet Scholarship and Most Valuable Football Player, were withheld until GAHS concludes its 2006 football campaign. The Blue Devils gridders will face New Albany’s Eagles in the Division 3, Region 12 semifinals Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. in OU’s Peden Stadium, Athens.
Major award winners Tuesday were:
Girls Fall Sports Scholastic—Carol Fahmy. The GAHS Academic Boosters Club sponsored the award. Asst. Principal Brent Saunders made the presentation.
John F. Groth III Scholastic—Alex Ables. The GAHS National Society sponsored the award. Carol Fahmy, president, made the presentation.
Most Valuable Volleyball—Alexis Geiger. The GAHS Athletic Department was sponsor. Bill Wamsley, athletic director, presented the award.
Most Valuable Boys Cross Country—Seth Amos. Wiseman Real Estate and Wiseman Insurance sponsored the award. Tim Massie, assistant principal, made the presentation.
Most Valuable Girls Cross Country—Lauren Adkins. Wiseman Real Estate and Wiseman Insurance sponsored the award. Tim Massie, assistant principal, presented the award.
Most Valuable Golfer—Aamal DeWal. GAHS Senior High Student Council sponsored the award. Rebejah Scites, president, presented the honor.
Most Valuable Soccer—Zach Wallen. Sponsored by the GAHS Principal’s Fund, Principal Bruce Wilson made the presentation.
The two football awards will be announced at a later date.
Prior to the individual awards, 32 student athletes were named to the 2006 All-SEOAL Academic Team. One hundred athletes were honored for maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better average during the fall sports season.
Ten athletes were All-SEOAL honorees and numerous captured district and regional honors this fall. The All-SEOAL football honorees will be announced after the conclusion of the football campaign.
Winners of Infocision’s Golden Helmet Awards for 2006 were announced—Phil Bokovitz, Sheridan; Jeff Golden, Vinton County; David Rumley, Pt. Pleasant; Jayme Haggerty, Chillicothe; Cole Jones, Logan; Chris McCoy, Portsmouth; Jayme Haggerty, Ironton; Seth Haner, Jackson; Caleb Fooce, Warren Local and Jake Duty, Athens.
Coaches Jim Pope, golf, Hayden Jones, soccer, Penny Roush, cross country, Debbie Simmons, volleyball, Matt Bokovitz, football, Christi Caldwell and Bethany Simmons, cheerleaders, Steve Patterson and Adam Clark, JV football and varsity assistants, introduced their players and performers and presented letters and certificates to those individuals.
The girl’s cross-country team received a big round of applause for winning the 2006 SEOAL title, district and regional crowns, a first in school history They finished 13th in the annual state meet earlier this fall.
Matthew Townsend, youth pastor, First Baptist Church, Gallipolis, gave the invocation. Jim Craft served as master of ceremonies.
