Gallia Academy High School’s annual spring sports banquet
featured numerous award presentations Monday evening in the Buckeye Hills Career
Center cafeteria, Rio Grande.
With more than 300 looking on, 82 Blue Devils and Blue Angels were presented
Southeastern Ohio Athletic League academic awards and 26 Blue Angels and Blue
Devils were awarded All-SEOAL Academic-Athletic certificates
Sixteen GAHS athletes received All-Southeastern Ohio League awards, plus Most
Valuable Player and Coach-of-the-Year awards. Honorees included:
Tennis—Jayme Haggerty, (also voted the league’s Most Valuable Player); Joe
Esmaeili and Adam Blake. Coach of the Year—Jim Osborne.
Baseball—Shaphen Robinson, Luke Haislop and Austin King.
Softball—Michelle Elliott and Amanda Lewis.
Boys Track & Field—Seth Haner, Jeff Howell, Michael Blank, Jeff Bose, Todd
Saunders and Tommy Saunders.
Girls Track & Field—Felica Close and Kayla Perry.
Those receiving All-Southeast Ohio District awards were:
Baseball—Matt Mooney, Kyle Bennett, Austin King and Luke Haislop, First Team and
Shaphen Robinson, Second Team.
The school’s Most Valuable Players in each sport included:
Baseball—Luke Haislop and Shaphen Robinson, co-MVPs.
Softball—Amanda Lewis.
Tennis—Jayme Haggerty.
Boy’s Track—Jeff Howell.
Girls Track—Felica Close.
Boys Spring Sports Scholastic Award—Kyle Burnett
Girls Spring Sports Scholastic Award—Leila Hojat.
Award sponsors included the GAHS Academic Boosters Club, GAHS Future Farmers of
America, Mrs. Vance Johnson, The Wiseman Agency, Tawney’s Jewelers, Dr. and Mrs.
Gene Abels.
Comments were made by:
Jim Osborne, tennis coach whose team compiled a 15-1 season mark and won the
school’s fourth SEOAL tennis championship. Previous titles were won in 1977,
1982, and 2002.
Rick Howell, girls track & field coach whose team won 44 and lost 14 with
several still participating in the annual district meet.
Paul Close, boys track coach whose team posted a 32-45-season mark, but has boys
taking part in the upcoming district meet.
Rich Corvin, whose baseball team posted a 13-12 season mark and advanced to the
sectional tournament finals before losing 9-3 to SEOAL champion Warren Local.
Jim Niday, softball team whose squad posted it’s first wining team in years with
an 11-10 mark and advanced to the sectional tournament finals before losing 7-0
to a powerful McDermott Northwest squad.
After comments, the coaches presented varsity and JV awards (G with inserts,
medals, plaques and trophies) to more than 90 athletes.
The GAHS Athletic Boosters Club sponsored the potluck banquet. Dave Tawney
served as master of ceremonies. Asst. Principal Brent Saunders delivered the
invocation. Steve Ebert gave the invocation.
